OTC – Over the Counter Medicines
OTC medicines, as their names suggests, are medicines that are available “Over the Counter” – without the need for a prescription from your doctor.

It was in the 1990s that demand for “self-care” products – a means for consumers to manage their own health – began to emerge. The importance of the individual’s role in maintaining his or her own health grew, partly through changes to lifestyle, but also through the use of preventive medicines, such as vitamin supplements. Individuals now have more opportunities than ever before to make decisions regarding their illnesses, by choosing the medicines with which to treat the symptoms and complaints that they recognise. This places an enormous burden of responsibility on pharmaceutical manufacturers, who must ensure that the public is properly informed, and must cooperate closely with doctors and pharmacists.

Almost a third of Hungary's stock of pharmaceutical products are purchased without a prescription, with the most money spent on painkillers, cold remedies, medicines that act on the digestive system, fungicidal and other dermatological preparations, as well as vitamin supplements.

Richter’s product range also contains a number of self-care preparations, a selection of which is described below, although the following is by no means an exhaustive list.

Perhaps the most well-known of our classic medicines is Kalmopyrin Tablets, which, since 1912, have been used to alleviate the symptoms of pain, fever and inflammation that can accompany acute illness, but also for the treatment of chronic diseases such as rheumatism. Besides Acetylsalicylic acid, which even today remains the most commonly used active ingredient for pain relief, Kalmopyrin tablets also contain Calcium gluconate. The latter can prevent the gastroenterological side effects that can arise, usually over the course of a long-term illness, in patients who are sensitive to the main active ingredient.

Phenylbutazon is applied externally for the topical treatment of a variety of mechanical and chemical dermatological inflammations, superficial phlebitis, traumatic swelling, haematoma, pulled muscles and tendons, and rheumatic pain.

For information regarding the risks and side effects, please read the patient's information sheet or ask your doctor or pharmacist.
