Medicines that act on the central nervous system
Research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) has shown that around a billion people worldwide are affected by various psychiatric, neurological and behavioural disorders. It is estimated that psychological or neurological problems occur in every fourth family. Of these, anxiety syndrome, depression, schizophrenia, cerebrovascular disorders, chronic (‘neuropathic’) pain, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy represent the greatest medical challenge in Hungary today.

Unfortunately, even today the sufferers of these syndromes are often ostracized, have a poorer quality of life and a higher incidence of physical disease. An important and constantly growing part of Richter’s product range is the group of medicines that act on the central nervous system. Our original pharmacological research also focuses on the development of new products in this area.

We currently have several molecules with the potential for medicinal use in the pre-clinical and clinical trial phases, which we hope to develop into new medicines for the treatment of anxiety, schizophrenia and chronic pain. It was Richter that developed the medicine, of Hungarian origin, that has been used for the treatment of chronic cerebral circulatory disorders for 30 years both in Hungary and abroad. This product is also eminently suitable for the treatment of chronic cerebrovascular diseases. The medicine acts in a number of ways: it improves cerebral blood flow, boosting the supply of oxygen to the brain, and also has a neuroprotective and antioxidant effect. Richter’s anti-depressant product for the treatment of mood disorders was first launched in 2001, and, in recognition of our high quality standards and cutting-edge pharmaceutical technology, received the Innovation Grand Prize in the following year. The medicine has a broad spectrum of effect, and besides depression can also be used for the treatment of anxiety disorders, while it is safe enough to administer to sufferers of post-stroke depression. Our range of neurological agents also includes anaesthetics, anxiolytics, tranquilisers, state-of-the-art antiepileptic drugs, a product for alleviating neuropathic pain, as well as one of the world-leading interferon medications for use in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
