In Hungary, it was in 1967 that we launched a contraceptive pill for mainstream use. The method was considered revolutionary at the time, owing to the changes it brought to family planning, sexual behaviour and society as a whole. As a result of our research and development work, the hormone content of the tablets has decreased to only 1-3% of the original quantity.
Even with such a low hormone content the pills retain their contraceptive efficacy, and are now far safer, owing to the reduction in the possible side-effects and risks of taking them.
Oral contraceptives also have a number of important preventive properties. For example they regulate the menstrual cycle, alleviate the feelings of general ill-being that accompany the mid-term and pre-menstrual stages, offer protection against iron-deficiency anaemia, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and ovarian cancer, as well as benign uterine and breast tumours. Naturally, hormonal contraception, just like the use of any other medicine, is not entirely risk-free, but the risks of the possible complications are dwarfed by the dangers of pregnancy, labour and childbearing, or termination. Among distributors of contraceptive pills, Richter Gedeon Nyrt is currently the market-leading pharmaceuticals manufacturer in Hungary.
Vaginal fungal infections have recently begun to assume endemic proportions. Some 75% of women will be infected at least once in their life, and in 5% of cases the infection will be recurring, in other words it will return four or more times a year, severely detracting from the patient's quality of life. Our widely available modern systematic and topical antifungal agents offer an effective treatment for acute and chronic recurring vaginal fungal infections.
Demographic data shows that life expectancies today are considerably higher than in the past, and as a consequence, more women than ever before live through the ‘change of life’. The climacteric is not a disease, but a physiological process – a fact of life for all women. An important event in the climacteric is the menopause, which basically means the cessation of menses, and typically lasts a year. This period is often accompanied by unpleasant symptoms, which can be alleviated by our hormone replacement products. Hormone replacement therapy during the menopause eliminates the hot flashes, nocturnal perspiration, insomnia and mood swings that are associated with the climacteric.
